This is Ørsted's experiment, as depicted in a Danish school book in 1910. A current flows to the wire, and the compass needle deflects to right-angles to the wire. This compass is a crude but efficient device prepared by merely gluing a magnetized needle on a cork, and then floating the cork-needle assembly in a pan of water. Courtesy, Niels Bohr Institute.
